The trick with chewing gum removal is ice - you need to
freeze it. Best thing here is to use an ice pack if you have one, or
if not, a few ice cubes in a sandwich bag should do the trick.
Place the ice over the chewing gum so that it
becomes hard and brittle (the longer the better), and then you can
start to pick it off with your fingers or scrap it off with a blunt
knife. If it starts to go stringy, reapply the ice to freeze it
again.
Patience and perseverance are definitely needed, but if it saves buying a new carpet, it's money well spent.
